Payroll Tax

Many employers are unsure at what level their total payroll attracts Payroll tax.  It is easy to be so busy running your business that this tax obligation is overlooked.  As this is a state tax the laws vary between states and it is crucial to understand which legislation you are under.

What is the definition of Payroll?

For NSW Payroll tax is levied on salaries, wages, directors’ fees, allowances (with some important exemptions), bonuses and commissions, taxable fringe benefits, shares and options issued, employer’s superannuation contributions, termination payments and some third-party payments.

There are some important exempt payments such as maternity leave and other types of leave payments.
